3 + 1

March 29, 2009

I had a super fun maternity session last weekend. These guys were my very first official clients, last February. Without their trust and support, I wouldn’t have met and photographed so many amazing families and learnt everything I’ve learnt this past year.

Their little boy is just a month younger than my son, and he’s going to be a big brother in less than two months!

Now, I just have to take a moment to gush about three things… people.

  1. The incredible little Reuben, who not only let me photograph him without running away or pulling a silly face (like my son does these days), but actually voluntarily put himself in the photos! I think there are many toddlers the world over who could take a few lessons from his book!
  2. Helen, who pre-warned me about certain parts of her body she didn’t want photographed, and here she is looking radiantly amazing! How many mothers can say their skin looks like that on their second pregnancy?! Not a stretch mark in sight!
  3. Darren, who not only helped me with my backdrop but was a total legend about getting his shirt off for some amazing photos with Helen (I didn’t want to push it by posting any of those ones).

It was SUCH a great session, and a good time to remind everyone how wonderful and unforgettable maternity sessions can be. Forget your droopy bits and your aches and pains. Let me show you how beautiful and amazing you really are. You will never regret it.

Enoy your sneak peek guys. I simply cannot wait to meet that little person you’re baking. I will try and get your gallery up in the next two weeks, but there is a bit of a backlog at the moment (in all areas of my life!), so my biggest apologies if it takes longer.

Lucky little girl

March 25, 2009

This cheeky little one year old has a big personality! She kept me and her mum on our toes through the whole shoot: I was so relieved she wasn’t walking yet!  She was also an extremely tolerant little model, endured about half a dozen clothing changes, and kept that mischievous little grin on her face right up until the last minute. And then suddenly she was TOTALLY over it! The last shot is proof. I just love it when toddlers show their discontent in such an boistrous way, so I couldn’t resist including it!

And what a lucky thing she is–her mother and her grandmother are very clever with a sewing machine and as a result, Mistress Cate has some seriously cool stuff. The little red dress was made out of an old favourite teeshirt of mum’s. I just love it!

Baby’s got blue eyes

March 21, 2009

I am so behind on my sneak peeks and proofing at the moment. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking when I decided to go back to uni this semester!!!

This gorgeous four month old from last Sunday’s session had me grinning from the moment I set eyes on him. I’m sure you can see why…

Thanks for having me Georgia: I really enjoyed our chat about the ‘other’ side of motherhood, and I really hope you enjoy these. He is such a little honey!

Chubby bubby

March 17, 2009

I first photographed this adorable ten month old when she was just ten weeks old. [Check out their sneak peek from last August if you like].

Is she the most irresistibly squishy, chubby little thing ever, or what?!  I just love chubby bubbies, after all, I was one myself once.

My little buddy | Canberra portrait photographer

March 15, 2009

Meet my little buddy Ash…

He is my first model for the book project I’m working on, and the son of a very dear friend of mine (who is also a photographer, and has taught me lots). I even posted some photos of him on my blog last June or July, when he was only a few weeks old.

He’s now 9 months old, my absolute favourite age to photograph (I decided to go with mainly older babies for my book project sessions, in case anyone was wondering). If you only ever get one professional photo session done, make sure it’s at this age: when baby is sitting up, separation anxiety hasn’t set in yet, and they’re not so mobile that you can’t keep them in one spot for a few minutes at a time. Ash was a little super star. We changed his clothes so many times and put him in all sorts of crazy spots and he just kept grinning! I just adore him, and I’m sure you can see why.

Enjoy!

If you want shots like this of your little one, please get in touch! I am on a roll at the moment, and really loving this stylistic approach to photographing babies.

Babies needed for an exciting new project | Canberra portrait photographer

March 6, 2009

I’m creating a book. It’s part of my final year graphic design coursework, but may eventually (hopefully) be something I publish for real. Eeek!

I don’t want to say too much about it at this stage, but in brief, the book is aimed at new mums and will contain many beautiful photographs of pregnant women, babies and lustworthy products.  I am VERY EXCITED about this!!!

I have a lot of material already, but I need more, and this is where you come in.

What I need:

  • Two babies under 6 months old (a boy and a girl).

I want to photograph them wrapped in beautiful looking wraps and also in funky MCNs (modern cloth nappies). You don’t need to have/own the wraps and nappies, but it would be a bonus if you did!

I will consider other babies, aged 6-18 months as well, but only if you can fulfill at least two of the optional requirements below and you have at least one totally cute designer outfit for your child.

What you will get:
  • Free professional prints of your baby looking utterly gorgeous. The quantity you get will depend on how successful the session is and how many good shots come out of it.
  • If this project is a success, your kid might have his/her photo published in a real book!
  • It’ll be fun!
Essential requirements:
  • You must live in Canberra.
  • You must have flexible availability: the session will have to take place sometime within the next two weeks.
  • You must have a fairly modern, neutral home interior with decent light (either nursery, bedroom or living area, it doesn’t matter, as long as you think your home looks good and you have a few nice looking pieces of furniture and accessories).
  • You must be happy to sign a model release. I will be using the photos taken in my print and online portfolio and in this publication.

Optional requirements (you may get preference if any of these apply):

  • You own MCNs (seriously good looking ones!)
  • You own some lustworthy baby wraps/blankets/accessories/toys
  • Your home (or at least one room in it) looks like it came out of a magazine
  • You breastfeed and you’re happy for me to take some (modest) photos of you feeding your baby.

If you’re interested in being a part of this, please email me ASAP at kat.words@gmail.com. It would be very helpful if you could include a photo of your home/nursery and your baby, tell me their age, where you live and when you’re available. Please don’t delay, it’s very important that I get this organised fast!

Feel free to pass on this link to anyone you know who might be interested.

Oh, and did I mention that I’m SUPER EXCITED?!
