Red | Canberra maternity photography

August 25, 2010

Yesterday afternoon, the gorgeous Michelle and I braved the freezing cold August wind to celebrate this amazing time in her life with a photo session.

It was ridiculously freezing. My hands were so cold I had trouble changing lenses, but Mich assured me that her baby girl was keeping her warm.

I can’t tell you how happy it made me to see that she had brought a red dress and red shoes to wear for our session! If I wasn’t halfway to becoming a human iceblock, I definitely would have squealed and jumped up and down on the spot. Red is absolutely and positively my favourite colour in the world, my signature colour even. And Mich seriously rocked that red dress, dontcha think?

Something tells me her hubby is going to love these pictures.

Number two is nearly here! | Canberra maternity & newborn photographer

July 21, 2010

Melissa & Michael had their first baby, the adorable Grace, in August of 2008. I had only just started building my portfolio and they were my second ever official maternity/newborn clients. This image of Grace remains one of my favourite newborn images, and I use it on a lot of my marketing material.

Heartstory newborn photography {new story}

So late last week I received an email from Melissa telling me that they were only a couple of weeks off the birth of their second child and could I please squeeze them in for a maternity/newborn session! Could I ever! It’s such a great feeling to have clients come back to me, and a real warm and fuzzy thrill to see a child whose face you know so well from when they were only one week old.

Melissa & Michael, it was so lovely to see you both yesterday and you were an absolute pleasure to photograph again. Grace, you stole my heart two years ago and you still have it! I am really looking forward to meeting your little brother or sister in a few weeks. xxx

Joy | Canberra maternity photographer

July 8, 2010

If you’re a long time reader, you already know how much I love maternity sessions. If you’re expecting a baby, there are two particular circumstances under which I really would like to convince you to go ahead and book a maternity session.

One: it’s your last baby. Did you ever have professional photos taken for any of your previous pregnancies? If the answer is no, then do it now! You should have already had it on your bucket list! A session could be the perfect time-out for you – indulge in a new outfit and let me show you how amazing you look. Or if you fancy a belly shoot with your brood in tow, I have a head full of fun ideas for that too!

Two: it’s your first baby. Therefore, this is the perfect opportunity to celebrate you, your pregnancy, and your relationship with your partner. Because where you are right now, the two of you, will never be repeated in your lives again, and you should savour it and have your story captured before life changes forever.

Sarah and Michael chose this spot for their maternity session because it’s exactly where they became husband and wife, four and a half years ago. The journey they’ve been on between then and now is theirs, but you can see it in the images I captured of them together. Their joy is evident. Their connection is heartwarming. They’re going to make wonderful parents, and I can’t wait to meet their little one in a few weeks.

Digital collections for maternity/newborn sessions & other news | Canberra newborn & baby photography

June 14, 2010

Winter is upon us in Canberra. And although I love the early morning mist and the stark blue skies, I really don’t relish the cold very much. That is why I own about forty scarves, and a big pile of assorted gloves. Except that any Canberran knows that there are days – and many of them – when lovely scarves and gloves do not make up for the bitterness of winter.

So, I understand the drop in bookings during winter, particularly outdoors ones. And to be honest, I don’t mind a bit of hibernation time myself. However, babies continue to be conceived and born regardless of the temperature outdoors, and as I approach the third birthday of my son – my very own smack-bang-in-the-middle-of-winter-baby – I thought it might be a nice time to show you my most popular product for new parents…

…the Heartstory Digital Collection…

Heartstory {maternity & newborn photography digital collection}

This double box luxury set holds two DVDs, one containing your maternity collection and the other containing your newborn collection, together with a 5×7.5″ print of every single image in both collections. For most maternity/newborn combos, this is between 50 and 70 prints.

Heartstory {maternity & newborn photography digital collection}

I know why it’s such a popular choice for my beautiful maternity and newborn clients. Because they can’t bear the thought of parting with any of the images in their galleries – they want to keep all of them!  This is why I love doing maternity and newborn combinations so much – to be a part of such a special time in a family’s life is an absolute honour, a privilege and a joy. Maternity and newborn collections hold the most precious, dear memories and moments that can never be repeated.  In many ways it is far more momentous and life changing than getting married, and that is why I take the responsibility of photographing it extremely seriously. Heartstory digital collections are a luxury product and presented as such. Purchasing yours gives you unlimited access to print, share and forever treasure your images. You can make albums and other keepsakes, you can make gift prints for family members and friends, you can make a slideshow to be shown at a special event, the possibilities are endless.

Heartstory currently offers a complimentary maternity session with every newborn session booked. So there really is no excuse to miss out on the chance to be photographed while you’re pregnant, especially if it’s your first or last pregnancy! Please get in touch (0402 091 949 or katie@heartstoryphotography.com.au) to find out more about maternity/newborn sessions, or hop on over to the Heartstory website.

In completely unrelated news, Heartstory will be at Mathilda’s Market in Canberra on September 12! I am super excited about this and I hope to see some of you there!

B is for belly… | Canberra maternity photographer

April 9, 2010

…and Belinda.

Belinda told me she didn’t think about getting photos done during her pregnancy until she saw the most recent maternity session on  my blog. And then she changed her mind. I love that! These sessions are so, so special, even more so when it’s your first baby. Or your last. Or any in between!!!

The beautiful curves, the glow of anticipation, the warm loving vibe that emanates from every pregnant woman… they were all there when I met Belinda for our session yesterday. Throw in some gorgeous, late afternoon, autumn light and my creative vision, and you’ve got a beautiful collection of portraits from an amazing never-to-be repeated time in your lives.

Belinda and Glen are such a sweet couple, and so down-to-earth; I just know they are going to make wonderful parents, and I’m so looking forward to meeting their little bundle in a few weeks!

Enjoy your sneak peek guys. I’ll be in touch very soon. xo

Pregnancy is seriously beautiful | Canberra maternity photographer

March 5, 2010

I can’t tell you how much I love maternity sessions. I have very fond memories of my pregnancy (well, minus the constant peeing, dizzy spells and three point turns in bed during the night), and I love being around pregnant women; it brings out the earth mother in me, I think! I love feeling that sense of anticipation, and seeing the beautiful glow that every pregnant woman has even when they think they don’t. I know pregnancy can be a time when a lot of women feel insecure about their appearance, but I wish each one of you could see yourself the way I do and celebrate this seriously beautiful time with a photo session like this one!

This is Ella’s second pregnancy and doesn’t she look incredible?! I had such a ball photographing and editing these shots.

Maternity sessions can be on your own, or with your partner and other children. Please don’t miss the chance to have this amazing and unique time in your life captured…

A beautiful weekend {part two}

November 22, 2009

It took me a while to get around to part two, didn’t it? I promise you, it is not due to slackness! I have been rushed off my feet all week helping my fellow students/graduates prepare for our design exhibition, which was held on Friday night.

So here we go, part two of my beautiful weekend in Wollongong. This mini session took place just up the road from my dear friends’ house. Gosh I’d love to live that close to the beach – not because I love swimming, mind you, but because I love taking photos!

I had quite a hard time trying to get Little Miss Seventeen Months to actually look up at me/the camera for this session. As you will see, she was much more interested in playing with and eating sand. And what toddler isn’t?!  The beach is like a giant sandpit, with a giant bath attached – it’s the best place ever!

Little Miss Seventeen Months became a big sister just two days after my visit, so I will be back to see these guys soon for another session and lots of newborn cuddles.

Enjoy!

A beautiful weekend {part one}

November 12, 2009

Last Friday evening, just 24 hours after completing my graphic design degree (yes, I have finally finished university, woohoo!), I hopped on a bus to Wollongong to visit my dearest friends J & J, and their darling Little Miss Seventeen Months. J was 39 weeks pregnant, and signs were pointing towards the big event happening any day. (I was secretly hoping it would happen while I was there, but it ended up happening in the wee hours of Tuesday morning, and now they have a second beautiful daughter–I can’t wait to meet her!)

We had a lovely, relaxing weekend just hanging out, and the weather was absolutely gorgeous. I took full advantage of it with my camera out at every available opportunity. And I got two sleep-ins in a row!!! I know that probably seems like a crazy thing to be excited about, but it was WONDERFUL!

We had two mini sessions, one at their house, and one later on at the beach down the road. Here is part one of my beautiful weekend…

I’m sure you’ll agree that J is one of the most beautiful pregnant women you ever saw!  It’s hard to believe that she’s carrying a 3.16kg baby in there, isn’t it?!

3 + 1

March 29, 2009

I had a super fun maternity session last weekend. These guys were my very first official clients, last February. Without their trust and support, I wouldn’t have met and photographed so many amazing families and learnt everything I’ve learnt this past year.

Their little boy is just a month younger than my son, and he’s going to be a big brother in less than two months!

Now, I just have to take a moment to gush about three things… people.

  1. The incredible little Reuben, who not only let me photograph him without running away or pulling a silly face (like my son does these days), but actually voluntarily put himself in the photos! I think there are many toddlers the world over who could take a few lessons from his book!
  2. Helen, who pre-warned me about certain parts of her body she didn’t want photographed, and here she is looking radiantly amazing! How many mothers can say their skin looks like that on their second pregnancy?! Not a stretch mark in sight!
  3. Darren, who not only helped me with my backdrop but was a total legend about getting his shirt off for some amazing photos with Helen (I didn’t want to push it by posting any of those ones).

It was SUCH a great session, and a good time to remind everyone how wonderful and unforgettable maternity sessions can be. Forget your droopy bits and your aches and pains. Let me show you how beautiful and amazing you really are. You will never regret it.

Enoy your sneak peek guys. I simply cannot wait to meet that little person you’re baking. I will try and get your gallery up in the next two weeks, but there is a bit of a backlog at the moment (in all areas of my life!), so my biggest apologies if it takes longer.

This is love.

February 18, 2009

After weeks of searing heat, Canberra is suddenly grey and miserable, with a distinctly wintery feel. Sunday was one of those nasty four-season days. I found myself peering outside apprehensively all morning, wondering how my evening maternity session was going to turn out, and if we should reschedule. After lunch, and several hours of on-off drizzly rain, I called my clients and rescheduled. The light was so dull, I couldn’t have even rescued this one by doing the entire shoot inside. Sometimes that’s just the way it is when you rely so much on light!

A couple of hours later, the sun was out again, the sky looked wonderful and the temperature had risen by what felt like 10 degrees, so after another phonecall, off I went.

And boy I’m glad I did!

It was magic. And not just the light: this couple were a dream to photograph. They welcomed me into their home like I was a friend, they went with every crazy idea I came up with, and even though they said they felt silly every now and then, it didn’t show! They were cute and funny and warm and open: it was so easy to capture the love and connection between them. This is what I love most about maternity sessions, and this is exactly why I think every couple should have one before their first child. It’s such an amazing time in your life; a time that can never be repeated. It’s full of hope, excitement, wonder and intense love. It’s incredibly intimate, but in a totally different way to any other time in your relationship. To me, that is what maternity sessions are all about and my goal is to capture the essence of that.

But, enough of my gushing. Here are some of my favourites…
