Another baby girl | Canberra newborn photographer

September 9, 2010

You might remember this beautiful family from their maternity session a couple of months back, before Emerson arrived.

I said in that entry that the image of big sister Grace when she was a newborn that I use on a lot of my marketing material is probably my favourite newborn image to date. Well, I think it now has some competition in this image right here. (I kind of knew it could happen when Melissa pulled out yet another stunning vintage bedspread…)

new stories {Heartstory newborn photography}

The Gowers sure make them purrrdy.  But don’t be fooled by that peaceful slumbering… Emerson spent most of our session wide awake learning all about her new life; her beautiful home, loving parents and proud big sister. She doesn’t want to miss a thing! She’s feisty and cheeky and oh so adorable, with some of the cutest chub I’ve ever seen. Oh, and she likes pulling faces.

Unforgettable | Canberra newborn photographer

September 7, 2010

I met Sarah and Michael back in July for their maternity session. It was a pretty special afternoon, and I was very much looking forward to meeting their baby because I had a feeling he/she was going to be pretty special too. Special things are always worth the wait, and she really made her mummy and daddy wait by arriving seventeen days past her due date!

She was asleep for the first fifteen minutes of our session yesterday morning, and I don’t think Sarah and Michael noticed, but I was moved to tears only a few minutes after I started shooting. Witnessing the intense love that new parents have for their first child is an incredible thing.

Then she woke up. And she was amazing.

Not only do I love her name (Freya is my favourite girl’s name ever, and I once had a cat called Freya who I adored) but she gave me an extraordinary gift: I experienced something I’ve never experienced before, and it was unforgettable. You know how they say that babies don’t smile ‘properly’ until they’re about 6 weeks old? So. Not. True. Not only did she smile over and over again, but she made her presence felt in a way that I’ve never seen a newborn baby do. I was totally in awe of her.

I’m pretty sure her parents already know how special their daughter is, and I now have the privilege of sharing the proof with the world (albeit the small world which reads my blog).

Meet Freya, at three weeks old. Something tells me she’s going to leave a mark.

Josephine | Canberra newborn photography

July 6, 2010

Becoming a parent for the first time is one of the most terrifying, exhilarating, intense, joyful, exhausting, amazing and life-changing experiences a person can have. When I think of it – not just my own experience, but the experiences of everyone I know – I am filled with emotion. My heart beats faster, tears spring to my eyes and I feel a surge of love and empathy that I can’t put into words.

That is why I take newborn sessions so seriously. Why I love them so much. Why I feel blessed for hours afterwards.

These moments are more precious and more fleeting than any other moments in life that I can think of. I am so honoured to be there to capture them.

Meet sweet little Josephine, whose amazing mother loved and wanted her before she was even old enough to be one herself…

Digital collections for maternity/newborn sessions & other news | Canberra newborn & baby photography

June 14, 2010

Winter is upon us in Canberra. And although I love the early morning mist and the stark blue skies, I really don’t relish the cold very much. That is why I own about forty scarves, and a big pile of assorted gloves. Except that any Canberran knows that there are days – and many of them – when lovely scarves and gloves do not make up for the bitterness of winter.

So, I understand the drop in bookings during winter, particularly outdoors ones. And to be honest, I don’t mind a bit of hibernation time myself. However, babies continue to be conceived and born regardless of the temperature outdoors, and as I approach the third birthday of my son – my very own smack-bang-in-the-middle-of-winter-baby – I thought it might be a nice time to show you my most popular product for new parents…

…the Heartstory Digital Collection…

Heartstory {maternity & newborn photography digital collection}

This double box luxury set holds two DVDs, one containing your maternity collection and the other containing your newborn collection, together with a 5×7.5″ print of every single image in both collections. For most maternity/newborn combos, this is between 50 and 70 prints.

Heartstory {maternity & newborn photography digital collection}

I know why it’s such a popular choice for my beautiful maternity and newborn clients. Because they can’t bear the thought of parting with any of the images in their galleries – they want to keep all of them!  This is why I love doing maternity and newborn combinations so much – to be a part of such a special time in a family’s life is an absolute honour, a privilege and a joy. Maternity and newborn collections hold the most precious, dear memories and moments that can never be repeated.  In many ways it is far more momentous and life changing than getting married, and that is why I take the responsibility of photographing it extremely seriously. Heartstory digital collections are a luxury product and presented as such. Purchasing yours gives you unlimited access to print, share and forever treasure your images. You can make albums and other keepsakes, you can make gift prints for family members and friends, you can make a slideshow to be shown at a special event, the possibilities are endless.

Heartstory currently offers a complimentary maternity session with every newborn session booked. So there really is no excuse to miss out on the chance to be photographed while you’re pregnant, especially if it’s your first or last pregnancy! Please get in touch (0402 091 949 or katie@heartstoryphotography.com.au) to find out more about maternity/newborn sessions, or hop on over to the Heartstory website.

In completely unrelated news, Heartstory will be at Mathilda’s Market in Canberra on September 12! I am super excited about this and I hope to see some of you there!

Life with a newborn | Canberra newborn photographer

May 4, 2010

I had a very special day yesterday. I met a beautiful little girl called Emma Grace, the first child of Belinda and Glen. Belinda and Glen are the kind of people you can’t help but like the minute you meet them and their warm, easy going natures are going to make them fantastic parents. (And Glen you can rest assured that the nice things I’m saying have nothing to do with your espresso machine, since I met you before I knew you shared my love of great coffee!)

Little Emma Grace has a stubborn streak (although I still can’t tell who she inherited that from), and she gave me a real run for my money. But I’m so glad she did… because she pushed me to be the best photographer I could be, and allowed me to capture some beautiful, poignant, and very real family moments that truly moved me.

Life with a newborn is a rollercoaster of intense emotions. For first time parents, it takes you to places you’ve never been, no  matter how much life you’ve lived. Some of those places are not very nice and some of them are the most wonderful, amazing places in the universe.

My memories of life with a newborn are nearly three years old and feel like a dream in that I can only remember very fleeting things; the smell of milky skin, an anguished cry, the heaviness of sleep deprivation, a feeling of joy and fear mixed together. I wish very much that those days had been captured like I captured Glen, Belinda and Emma’s day yesterday.

Thank you Belinda and Glen for inviting me into your home and your life. It’s been such a pleasure, and I hope you enjoy these images as much as I enjoyed making them. xxx

Nine days new | Canberra newborn photographer

April 3, 2010

You might remember the stunning Ella, who I photographed a few weeks back in some glorious late afternoon Canberra sunlight… well, her second daughter - Taylor – was born nine days ago. I met her this morning, and she was divine.

This next image makes tears spring to my eyes every time I look at it. Those first few weeks go by so fast…

The perfect swirl of hair on (almost) every newborn’s head never ceases to amaze me, no matter how many I see.

Taryn is so in love with her little sister.

I just couldn’t resist including this one. No doubt Taylor’s parents will see this face come up now and then in the years to come.

Thank you so much Ella and Craig for letting me capture your babymoon. Taylor was an absolute joy (as I said, my easiest and shortest newborn session ever!) and I hope you love these images. There are many more to come. xxx

Gorgeous girls | Canberra portrait photographer

January 24, 2010

This is a seriously overdue sneak peek, but it’s here now!

I met little baby C just two days before the start of 2010; she is the second gorgeous daughter of my dearest friend Jen, who has featured on my blog on several occasions with her amazing glowing pregnancies and chubby cheeked daughter #1, the divine Miss S.

She was already 7 weeks old when I met her, and my fellow photographers will know that it’s a less than ideal time to get squishy sleeping shots, although I tried, oh how I tried! Do not be fooled, this audacious little bundle slept for all of about 20 minutes during the shoot, and 19 of those minutes were in mum’s arms!

Despite the lack of sleep, she was an awesome little model, just like her big sister, and extremely chilled out with divine skin just like her mum. And how beautiful is Little Miss S in that adorable dress? I just love her wispy hair and cheeky smile.

Now enough of my gushing… here are the pics…

The perfect session | Canberra newborn photographer

November 28, 2009

I had the most amazing session this morning. It was amazing, because during the session I couldn’t stop gushing, and I had more than a couple of moments where I wanted to leap in the air with excitement and squeal (except I didn’t, because the vibe was so chilled, it wouldn’t have been right!). Then, when I got home, I was so excited about what I’d captured that I couldn’t resist getting stuck straight into processing, and have gotten most of the way through the images already! And I have so many faves, it was hard to choose what to put into this sneak peek.

A few things about Little Miss S:

  • Little Miss S is eighteen days old: she shares her birthdate with another very special little girl, who I’ll be meeting in a couple of weeks.
  • Little Miss S also shares her beautiful name with another very special little girl, who has featured on my blog rather a lot in the last seventeen months.
  • Little Miss S is the sweetest, cutest, most chilled out little thing: I barely heard a peep from her all morning!
  • Little Miss S has some pretty awesome (and very photogenic) parents, who I just loved meeting and hanging out with today.
  • Little Miss S is going to love playing in her amazing back yard when she gets a bit older.

After spending the first hour of our session outside in the most perfect rambling, sun-dappled, garden ever, we headed indoors, where Little Miss S’ mum and I chatted about our shared Dutch heritage and Little Miss S’ dad worked his magic on settling Little Miss S to sleep.

New

Eighteen days

This morning epitomised my idea of the perfect session in so many ways. Throughout most of it, I played the role of a silent observer: my job was to capture S & Ds devotion to their new daughter, and their joy and wonder getting to know her. And this is exactly why every new parent should consider a customised photo session: the first few weeks of parenthood are a blur, they go by so quickly, and are often full of intense emotions and overwhelming exhaustion. But in amongst it all, there is a beautiful quietness, an indescribable feeling of ‘rightness’, an amazing new bond, a new understanding of love and perfection – it begs to be captured, because it’s so easily forgotten.  S & D specifically asked for casual photos, and I was more than happy to oblige. I found myself captivated by their enjoyment of Little Miss S. I didn’t once ask them to look to the camera. I barely directed. I moved in and around them and captured love. And I loved every second of it. I was reminded once and for all why I love being a photographer and how much I want this to be my life.

Thank you so much S & D, for welcoming me into your home and your hearts today. You gave me a special gift, and I will always remember this session. I’ll be in touch with your gallery very, very soon!

6 weeks old | Canberra newborn photographer

July 21, 2009

I have just returned from a ten day jaunt to Sydney and Wollongong to spend time with family and friends, so I am a little bit behind!  We had a lovely time, and I was reminded once again how seriously crappy Canberra winters are, compared to Sydney and the coast. The weather was gorgeous!

So here is the first of my two sessions, which took place in inner city Sydney. Young Master O is the third cousin and the first boy born into one side of his beautiful family since January 2008!  Very exciting!  At 6 weeks old, I couldn’t believe what a well behaved little thing he was, smiling for the camera, drifting off into a deep sleep, and then waking up in a fantastic mood for some lovely photos outside. I can think of a few 1 week old babies he could teach a few things to!  And what wonderful hair!  Like he’d just had a quick trip to the salon in time for his photo session!

Smiles all round!

If you look very closely at the last one, you can see another member of their family trying to join in on the action. :)

Thanks for a fun session guys: your little boy is very handsome and cuddly and I’m so looking forward to seeing him grow up. I’ll be in touch with the rest of your gallery soon.

Miss Evie | Canberra newborn photographer

May 31, 2009

You know, I really love it when baby throws a curveball during a session – it really gets my creative juices flowing! I’m sure Miss Evie was going for some kind of record for staying awake and alert during most of our session last Tuesday! I went back on Saturday morning to finish up, and she did it again! But no matter, because we had the snuggliest wrap ever and she really loved being snuggled!

I was very excited to catch the tail-end of the autumn leaves in the backyard, and isn’t Evie just the perfect autumn baby with that creamy skin and rich brown hair?  The outside shots were taken at 8 days old and the rest at 12 days old.

Evie’s big brother is 22 months old and very proud of his baby sister. I think he would kiss Evie all day long if he could.

I’m so looking forward to watching Miss Evie grow – she is sure to be a bright and gorgeous thing, being born into such an awesome family. :)

If you’re having a baby soon and you would like a newborn photo session, please get in touch as early as possible so I can pencil in your due date. It’s best to have baby photographed in the first 7-10 days, because that’s when they’re the most curly and cooperative and their skin is best. However, if you can’t manage it in that time frame, it doesn’t matter—we will still get a fantastic and creative set of photos that you’ll treasure for a lifetime. I really think every parents should have their babies photographed as soon as possible after birth, and I’m not just saying that because I’m a photographer and I want your business!!! It’s just such a fleeting time in your lives and will be over before you know it. Young Master J from my last blogged newborn session is now 6 weeks old, has almost doubled his weight and is nearly out of 000 clothes!

I also offer combined maternity and newborn packages which include artmounts and personalised, custom designed birth announcements—get in touch to find out more.
