And the winner is…. | Canberra portrait photographer

September 5, 2010

I’m so excited to announce the winner of our Fathers Day competition …

… a big congratulations to MariE! You have won a family portrait session and a matted 8×12″ print! I will be in touch with you very soon to talk through the details. Now go and share the great news with your family!

I was so overwhelmed by the beautiful entries in the competition; the memories you shared were from the heart and touched me deeply. And because of that, I decided to draw two more names as Runners Up (or is it Runner Ups?!).

The Runners Up each receive $50 off a family portrait session and two 5×7.5″ prints. Congratulations to Dan Gray and Danielle M!

Now let me share a few of my favourite entries…

One of my fond memories of my father from childhood is about his creativity. He’d play guitar and I’d listen or sing along as if the music was gold dust falling from the strings he played so skillfully. I also loved to watch him draw. The pencil lines would eventually take on a picture that almost came to life. Early this year, he suffered a massive stroke. He has been working hard in rehabilitation. I am so blessed my dad is still alive even though our lives have greatly changed.

My father worked long hours at channel 9 when I started primary school, so didn’t get to see me get into my school dress for the first time (we obviously took photos on the film camera) and didn’t get to greet me when I came home. But when I did get home, there were a beautiful bunch of roses & other flowers with a hand written card, which he’d had delivered to the house. so he was “there” when I got home. I STILL have the card, which is very tattered, but I still smile everytime I see it in my keepsake box.

I have several precious memories of my father – working in the garden with him and stuffing hessian bags full of leaves in Autumn (he made it fun by saying we were feeding the elephants as I held the sack wide open), hours spent in the backyard while he helped me to throw and catch a ball, firecracker nights when he built a big bonfire and let off the fireworks and then showed me how to roast potatoes in the glowing embers, riding together on the Octopus at Luna Park and swinging right out over Sydney Harbour, receiving a silver necklace that he bought for his future daughter when he was posted to Borneo in WW2. Then when I had daughters of my own, watching him as he played with and loved his granddaughters. He was a quintessential grandad and had only a short few years with my first daughter; he died when my second daughter was three months old. I wish often that he could have seen them grow up; he would have been a great influence in their lives. Now I watch my husband and see what a great dad he is. He is patient, kind and loving and does everything he can for our daughters, even when the going is tough.

A father is one who will bring out the best in his child, treat them with love and respect. Play with them, encourage them, let them shine in their unique way. He would show them his love in a million different ways – from reading them books, to playing ‘tea party’ or ‘monsters’, to giving up his career to stay at home and look after them. He takes them to parks – and searches out the best ones and names each one like ‘The Dinosaur Park’ and ‘The Climbing Park’. He loves their mother unconditionally and shows them what it is to be a man – whether he has daughters or sons. My father was none of those things and did none of those things … but my children’s father does. Every single day.

There are so many memories I have of great times with my Dad from my childhood. The ones that stick in my mind are all about my Dad teaching me things – passing down his skills and wisdom – and doing it as a single father in an era when they didn’t always get much time with their kids. I never really appreciated how important this connection was until recently when I found myself in the same position – a single father passing on my skills and wisdom to my beautiful daughters.

And here’s a recent fave of Toby and his Daddy.

Come and see us at Mathilda’s Market! | Canberra portrait photographer

September 1, 2010

I’m very excited about Heartstory’s first market appeareance! And what a fantastic market to be a part of! If you haven’t been to Mathilda’s Market before, Sunday September 12 is your day. You could seriously get most of your Christmas shopping done in one place, and what better gifts than the amazing goodies at Mathilda’s?!

This market contains an absolute feast of gorgeous and unique products for babies and kids (and some stuff for mums and dads too!) made by talented artists & designers from near and far. I shopped there for the first time in June and LOVED IT. There is nowhere else in Canberra where you can get access to such a stunning range of (mostly) handmade things – clothing, accessories, homewares & toys. Plus, it’s a great way to support all those small businesses out there, who like me, put their heart and soul into what they do. A lot of stallholders have special ‘markets only’ prices too, so even though many have websites and etsy stores, you can’t beat those special deals, and shopping is so much more fun when you can touch it before you buy it!

Mathilda's Market

I can’t wait to set up our stall! I have a beautiful array of new sample books and albums and other products, including my stunning handmade fine art albums which will be making their public debut! I will also have a special offer for Mathilda’s shoppers – so you’ll have to come along, or miss out! But wait, there’s more! I will also be launching my 2010 Christmas packages at Mathilda’s. So please come and say hi!

Ok, you’ve sold me, now where do I find this amazing market that will solve all my Christmas problems?

The Hyatt Hotel Canberra, Commonwealth Ave, Yarralumla. The market is held in the Ballroom, and there is easy pram access at rear.

What date and time do I need to immediately put in my iphone/calendar/diary so I don’t miss out?

Sunday 12th September, 9am to 1pm.

What other exciting details do I need to know?

Entry and parking is free.

There are nearly 60 stall holders in total, including yummy food and kids’ entertainment, so you don’t need to bring anything.

It is probably a good idea to have some cash on hand, as there are no ATM facilities, however many stallholders will have EFTPOS or credit facilities.

For a sneak preview of what’s in store, head to mathildasmarket.com.au or check out their blog at mathildasmarket.blogspot.com.

I don’t live in Canberra, BOOO!

Well then, you will be pleased to hear that Mathilda’s Markets are held regularly in seven cities around Australia! More info at: mathildasmarket.com.au.

So I’ll see you all there, next Sunday, riiiiight?!

Mathilda's Market

P.S. Only two more days to enter my Fathers Day competition. Details here: http://heartstoryphotography.com.au/blog/special-offers/winasessionfathersday/

Lately | Canberra portrait photographer

August 23, 2010

I must apologise for things being a bit quiet on the Blogfront lately, but I’m pleased to tell you that I have a few fun little projects in the pipeline… so don’t go away!

I posted several weeks back that I was off to Cooma one fine Saturday to judge a photography competition. Well, judge I did. Wow, what an interesting and enjoyable experience! Huge thanks to Ian Pfeffer, the owner of Polo Red Gallery in Cooma, who invited me to come and select the finalists for the 2010 Photographic Prize. I was flattered and honoured to play such an important role, and I took my job very seriously. Big thanks also to my lovely friend Bec who I asked along to help me out.

Here is a photo Bec took of me pondering one of the images.

Heartstory {Canberra portrait photographer}

I have always thought I had well developed skills in critical analysis, (thanks to a childhood spent immersed in the world of fine art, followed by years of study in creative fields where ‘critique’ is a normal part of every day life) and it was very satisfying to put them to valuable use. I spent the better part of the day at the gallery, sorting and resorting entries and putting my brain and heart to work. I chose forty finalists from the entry pool and they are now hanging in the gallery awaiting your verdict. That’s right – the winner of the $1250 grand prize is decided via visitor vote, and will be announced at the end of this week. Voters also go in the running for a bottle of Grange – niiiice! I have several bigtime favourites (but my lips are sealed) and I can’t wait to see if one of them is the lucky winner!!!

In other news, I was excited to see one of my images in print again this month. LittleONE is a gorgeous new magazine for mums with style and taste. It has some fantastic articles about parenting, especially for the early days, and in my opinion is one of the best mags out there for this demographic. However, I can quite honestly say that much as I love it, I’m kinda glad it wasn’t around when Toby was a baby, because I would have been a lot poorer – it is full of so many inspiring and beautiful products for little ones, and the latest issue is completely focused on design & style. Here are some snaps of my work published in their last two issues. (Please note: the cover images not mine – I just wanted to show what the mag looks like in case you want to buy it!)

Digital collections for maternity/newborn sessions & other news | Canberra newborn & baby photography

June 14, 2010

Winter is upon us in Canberra. And although I love the early morning mist and the stark blue skies, I really don’t relish the cold very much. That is why I own about forty scarves, and a big pile of assorted gloves. Except that any Canberran knows that there are days – and many of them – when lovely scarves and gloves do not make up for the bitterness of winter.

So, I understand the drop in bookings during winter, particularly outdoors ones. And to be honest, I don’t mind a bit of hibernation time myself. However, babies continue to be conceived and born regardless of the temperature outdoors, and as I approach the third birthday of my son – my very own smack-bang-in-the-middle-of-winter-baby – I thought it might be a nice time to show you my most popular product for new parents…

…the Heartstory Digital Collection…

Heartstory {maternity & newborn photography digital collection}

This double box luxury set holds two DVDs, one containing your maternity collection and the other containing your newborn collection, together with a 5×7.5″ print of every single image in both collections. For most maternity/newborn combos, this is between 50 and 70 prints.

Heartstory {maternity & newborn photography digital collection}

I know why it’s such a popular choice for my beautiful maternity and newborn clients. Because they can’t bear the thought of parting with any of the images in their galleries – they want to keep all of them!  This is why I love doing maternity and newborn combinations so much – to be a part of such a special time in a family’s life is an absolute honour, a privilege and a joy. Maternity and newborn collections hold the most precious, dear memories and moments that can never be repeated.  In many ways it is far more momentous and life changing than getting married, and that is why I take the responsibility of photographing it extremely seriously. Heartstory digital collections are a luxury product and presented as such. Purchasing yours gives you unlimited access to print, share and forever treasure your images. You can make albums and other keepsakes, you can make gift prints for family members and friends, you can make a slideshow to be shown at a special event, the possibilities are endless.

Heartstory currently offers a complimentary maternity session with every newborn session booked. So there really is no excuse to miss out on the chance to be photographed while you’re pregnant, especially if it’s your first or last pregnancy! Please get in touch (0402 091 949 or katie@heartstoryphotography.com.au) to find out more about maternity/newborn sessions, or hop on over to the Heartstory website.

In completely unrelated news, Heartstory will be at Mathilda’s Market in Canberra on September 12! I am super excited about this and I hope to see some of you there!

Multiple awards at the 2010 Australian Professional Photography Awards!

June 8, 2010

I arrived home last night after nearly five days in Melbourne, most of which was spent at the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) judging. The judging took place inside the Digital Life expo, a three day event for photographers, designers and those associated with the industry at the Melbourne Convention Centre. As many of you will know, I only joined the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) in January, and so this was my first time entering and attending the APPAs, and wow, what an experience!

My itinerary also included a heck of a lot of socialising and an insane amount of laughter. I met many new people, and got to spend time with many lovely friends as well. (Oh, and I shopped too, of course! A trip to Melbourne is never complete without shopping!)

And quite apart from the social aspect, I saw some absolutely amazing work, a lot of which was by those I am fortunate enough to call friends. Many of my fellow ‘emerging’ photographers entering for the first time picked up more than one award for their prints, and it was all just so exciting to watch and be a part of. Congratulations to all of you gorgeous, clever people, including those who didn’t make it over that frustrating ‘79′ – you are all winners in my eyes!

Those of you who follow my facebook page may have have noticed a few excited status updates from the judging, but for those who don’t, I’m so thrilled and happy to share with you that I was awarded three silver awards for the three prints I entered! The first two were in the Illustrative category, and third was in Portrait (the same image I got a silver for at the state awards earlier in the year). There is a new category in the APPAs called Family, which is all about the every day work of photographers who specialise in photographing babies, children and families – it was fascinating to watch the judging of that category and I will definitely be entering it next year.

Katie Kolenberg {ACT AIPP Epson 2010 Emerging Photographer of the Year}

Katie Kolenberg {ACT AIPP Epson 2010 Emerging Photographer of the Year}

So for anyone reading this who:

  • has never been a part of the AIPP APPAs or state print awards
  • is just getting into photography and looking for inspiration
  • wants to see some amazing work that you would never ordinarily get the chance to see
  • wants to learn and network with other photographers
  • is about to make the leap into professional photography…

Let me urge you to go along to next year’s APPAs (which I believe will be in Sydney) and watch the judging. Treat yourself to three days of total immersion in the professional industry. It’s fascinating, inspiring, educational and a whole heap of fun. I am already looking forward to 2011!!!

AIPP ACT Epson Emerging Photographer of the Year | Canberra portrait photography

April 23, 2010

Last night was the official opening of the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) ACT Award Winners’ Exhibition. As my regular readers would know, I recently entered the combined ACT/NSW AIPP print awards for the first time and won three silvers. That was more than good enough for little ol’ me, but then, by some amazing stroke of good fortune, it turned out that my scores were high enough to win me the title of ACT Emerging Photographer of the Year!!!

Talk about stunned. And thrilled. And a whole bunch of other emotions! Going to the print award judging in Sydney was the absolute highlight of my photography career to date, and this award is a wonderful reminder that following your heart 100% is the best way to live your life. It was just a few months ago that I took a huge, scary leap of faith and left my public service career to turn my dream of being a full time professional photographer into reality. And it’s funny to think that just a few years ago my dream was so tightly locked away inside me that I really thought it would always be just a dream. And right now I am just so happy; excited (for the future), inspired (beyond words), and grateful to soooooo many people for so many things, and I don’t want to gush and gush, but I do want to name a few names – Bec, Jesh, Christine, Bob, MJ, Kelly, Dan, Alicia; thank you. <3

So, if you’re in Canberra and you love photography, you simply must go and see the Award Winners’ Exhibition. It’s held at The Artworks gallery in Fyshwick (2 Cumberland Court, 52 Wollongong Street) and is on until May 5. I am completely honoured to have my prints on the wall alongside so many successful and talented Canberra photographers, and I am so, so, so glad I joined the AIPP!

And because it wouldn’t be a proper post without a photo, here’s one I took of my boy this morning while we were out location scouting in this glorious autumn weather.

Silver! | Canberra portrait photographer

March 30, 2010

On Sunday and Monday I did something I’ve never done before: I attended the judging for the AIPP (Australian Institute of Professional Photography) state print awards in Sydney (combined ACT/NSW). For the first time, I entered four prints and I am so happy and excited to tell you that I received three silver awards! Such an amazing buzz and a wonderful, inspirational learning experience; to have my work judged by some of ACT and NSW’s top photographers (people I admire and respect so much), and to be present to see so much extaordinary work by so many talented artists.

Here are my award winning images:

Love Autumn Mini Sessions: bookings now open! | Canberra baby, child & couple photographer

March 16, 2010

Guess what my favourite season is? Autumn of course, silly!

heartstory {love autumn}

heartstory {love autumn}

Sure, it might be starting to get a little chilly here in Canberra at that time of year, but it’s nothing a new jacket, a pair of boots and a pretty scarf or hat won’t fix. And that goes for littlies as well as adults!

heartstory {canberra baby photography}

Autumn is the best time of year for outdoors photography. The colours are stunning, the light is beautiful, the weather is predictable, and the littlies are happy and full of beans!  Everyone loves being outdoors in autumn! What child doesn’t love playing in leaves or running around like crazy without getting too hot? If you’ve been wondering when to get that photo session done, then let me tell you now is the right time!

And here’s another great reason why: to celebrate my love of autumn and this beautiful city we live in which has such distinct and stunning seasonal changes, I am offering two full days of mini sessions for babies, children & couples for the first time ever. Woot!

Why mini sessions? Because it allows you to get a selection of beautiful, professional photos at a really great price. It’s a perfect opportunity to get updated photos of your baby or child, without a minimum spend, but with options to upgrade and great discounts should you wish to do so.

Love Autumn Mini Sessions $300 {for babies, children & couples}

  • 30 minute photo session with me, in one of two carefully chosen outdoors locations in beautiful, autumnal Canberra
  • 10-15 fully edited images in a private online gallery
  • 2 5×7.5″ fine art gift prints of your choice
  • 2 8×12″ fine art wall prints of your choice
  • complete hi res digital collection available for an extra $450 (regular price is $1000!)
  • 10% off regular Heartstory a la carte pricing

The dates and locations are as follows…

Saturday April 24: A secret location in the Belconnen area (I will let you know over the phone when you make your booking!)
Saturday May 8: Commonwealth Park, Lake Burley Griffin

Spots are limited and on these dates only (unless we get rained out, in which case all sessions will be transferred to the next available date), so please book early to avoid missing out.

To making a booking, please email katie@heartstoryphotography.com.au or call me on 0402 091 949.

Please note:

  • a $100 non-refundable (but fully transferrable) desposit is required to secure your booking, and the remaining balance is due one week before the session.
  • this deal is designed specifically for capturing babies, children and couples, but if you would like a couple of family shots as well, I am more than happy to do that!
  • If you have more than two children in your family, you are best off booking a regular session, because 30 minutes wouldn’t allow enough time for larger families.
