Retro madness at the Canberra show | Canberra photographer

February 28, 2010

We went to the Canberra show today… sticky, smelly, overpriced, crowded, but so much FUN!  Brings out the kid in me, and you gotta love that!

hipstamatic

I took my camera and didn’t use it, partly because I was on strict stroller duties due to hub’s broken wrist, but also because I was having too much fun playing with photography apps on my iPhone! I heart my iPhone. I also heart retro photographs.

tilt shift

I have wanted to buy an old sx70 polaroid camera for a while now, and would also love to have a play around with some old plastic toy cameras, which I’ve never done before… but now that I have these cool apps, I don’t think I’ll bother: this is just too much fun! Plus, who doesn’t love instant gratification?!

Despite a pretty fun morning, I am really disappointed that I missed getting a shot of Toby taking his very first pony ride. I’m not sure what I did, but in my excitement, I must have forgotten to hit save, and I lost the pic. Really bummed about that, because it was one of the biggest highlights of the day. That, and when we were watching the goat stud prizes and he refused to accept that they were goats and kept yelling out ‘CANEL!’ (camel) at the top of his lungs. He loved the pony ride, loved it (although I’m not sure whether it was the actual pony or the cool white helmet he got to wear that was more appealing).

January in photos: the final day

January 31, 2010

Wow, it’s the last day! I’m a bit sad.

I am off to a workshop this morning, so I had to do my last January pic early, and what better subject than a bit of morning madness from my favourite 2.5 year old?! He’s not going to be able to do this when his new big boy bed arrives next week, but he had a great time this morning with his ‘pallows’, jumping around like a maniac.

And so, there will be no more daily photos from me for a while. I really hope you’ve all enjoyed seeing a month of my life as much as I enjoyed capturing it. I encourage everyone to give this project a go; it is so rewarding and such a beautiful record of memories to look back on.

January in photos: day 30

January 30, 2010

Toby and Daddy were off on a ‘vencha’ this morning, and were going to drop me off at my session on the way, but we were running early, so we stopped first for some photos at the foot of Mount Taylor. I can’t tell you exactly what it is I love about this image so much, but I just do. 5 seconds after I took it, Toby did a massive faceplant, and got completely covered from head to toe in dust and dirt.

January in photos: day 29

January 29, 2010

I had a bit of an awful day today, but as always my passion for photography made it all better for me for a good 30 minutes, while I shot Toby picking tomatoes in the veggie garden. They are getting out of CONTROL!

I loved watching the deliberation and confidence with which he picked each ripe tomato on this stem, and decided it had to be my photo for today. But I couldn’t resist including some outtakes as well. He has grazed both knees about 3 times in the last two weeks, and I really wanted to capture today’s effort. Plus the unself-conscious way he oozes coolness wearing his hat backwards like that (he puts it on like that, it has nothing to do with us!).

January in photos: day 28

January 28, 2010

Toby was not a happy chappy today, reported as ‘on edge’ all day at daycare. I took his t-shirt off after dinner because he was hot, and he threw one of the biggest ones I’ve ever seen. I know, I am probably cruel getting the camera out at such times, but these are the REAL moments of toddlerhood, and before I know it, they’ll be over and I’ll forget how intense life can be for a two year old, and how beautiful he was, even when hurt and angry.

January in photos: day 27

January 27, 2010

In 1999, while travelling and working overseas, I bought a pair of red doc marten mary-janes and they were my most worn pair of shoes over the ensuing 10 years of my life. I’ve actually been looking for a replacement now for, oh, about 4 years. I have high standards. They had to be a colour, but not red. They had to have cool buckles. They had to be kinda different.

I finally found them. I seriously doubt these ones will last 10 years, but I love them anyway.

January in photos: day 25

January 25, 2010

This was taken at the Australia Day Eve concert on the Parliament House lawns this evening.

Possibly one of the most exciting, awesome moments in Toby’s life to date. I thought his eyes were going to pop out of his head. Every time the planes came back into view, his whole body would stiffen with excitement, and then as soon as they disappeared out of view, he would get all quivery and shout for them to come back. He LOVED it.

I actually had him him on my shoulders for a good three quarters of the airshow, and it was awesome to be totally in the moment, without the camera for a change. But then I couldn’t resist and had to grab it!

On another note, I took this with my old 30D, which I don’t use much these days, but maaaaan, it’s filthy. Check out the crap on the sensor. Sheesh.

January in photos: day 24

January 24, 2010

We got all kinds of stuff done today, a lot of which involved new things and changes in Toby’s little life. For example, yesterday we finally bought him a big boy’s bed, and even though we won’t have it for two weeks, today we decided to dismantle his cot, and get him used to a bigger sleeping space by setting up the mattress on the floor in the space the bed will go. We also said goodbye to the highchair, and until we get hold of a decent booster seat, he’ll be eating his dinner at his little table and chair – which he did tonight without any pants on.

So there were plenty of photo ops, and I did snap away on several occasions, but it was these totally impromptu shots I grabbed right before bed while he was putting on a little performance for us that I loved the most. This child sure does love being silly and making a racket (and yes, he gets it from me), and these facial expressions are so perfectly him (and probably very me too), it makes me smile all over.

January in photos: day 22

January 23, 2010

We had a water pistol fight after dinner tonight. I just love the way he’s clenching his fist at the same time as firing.

23.01.2010

Pretty soon after we began racing around the yard squirting each other, we were interrupted by some friends dropping by who just happened to be dog-sitting another friend’s English Springer for the weekend. Toby luuuuurves doggies.
