Some technical notes: Five of my fifty days were shot on the Fuji x100 (15, 21, 23, 24 & 49), two on the iPhone 4S (46 & 48), the rest on my Mk2 (mostly with the 35L). And I stayed true to all the rules I set for the project, except for a few Photoshop black and white conversions towards the end, and day 49 where I include four images in one.

And that’s it for another year! I really hope you’ve enjoyed the daily snippets of my life and the relationship I have with my son. Toby is my ever-present muse and (I’m sure I’ve said it many times before) Heartstory wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for him and powerful gifts he has given me. Hard as I found the first year of being a mum, it was during that time when I was lost and exhausted that my son awoke the artist trapped inside of me, and helped me start to come to terms with so many of the things I was struggling with before he was born, including the kind of lifestyle I wanted and the need for heartfelt purpose in work and play. That’s why my personal work will nearly always be about him in some way.

Life is so precious and time goes so fast. Change and growth is beautiful and amazing, but every single day we leave behind things which mean the world to us. Our stories deserve to be told, no matter how ordinary they may seem. Stories bring a sense of place, of belonging, they celebrate and give meaning to the small things that get lost in every day life. They lift us up, they carry us, they re-centre us and help us focus when times are tough. They remind us of our humanity, they remind us of the value of each and every day, they remind us of the people and the things and the moments that meant something. And I passionately believe that those stories should be told as we live them, and not in hindsight, which is why I’m a photographer and not a writer. My words would have only a fraction of their meaning, if it wasn’t for the images that go with them.
