The story of Alex & Iain // Sydney portrait photography

Alex and Iain live in a character-filled, old-school apartment in the Eastern suburbs of Sydney. They have a small dog called Mouse and a giant cat called Harry. They are clever, creative, completely genuine and not afraid to just be themselves. I love that about them, because not only is it so very endearing to be around, but it makes my job as a story teller very easy, since every moment that unfolds in front of me is pure ‘them’, with no excuses. My second favourite thing about Alex and Iain is their awesome combined sense of humour. They are so hilarious that I was in hysterics several times during our shoot, and again while I was editing and processing their images! I actually had to censor some of their images!!! These guys are not the type to be deep when the alternative is to be ridiculous, but the beautiful love between them came pouring out and was easy to capture, regardless of all the hilarity.

Before you sink into this beautiful and silly story, I want to say a few things about couples portrait photography. Every single relationship is completely unique; what connects two people to each other, how they connect, their lifestyle, their sense of humour, their taste, the way they communicate… when I photograph a couple, those ingredients come together and tell a pretty special story. These stories are very different to stories about a family. But just as important. I have been capturing more and more stories like this (see more couple portrait sessions) over the past 12 months and it is a dear wish of mine that all committed couples would have a portrait shoot at some point in their relationship. These shoots aren’t about the camera — you’ll forget I’m even taking pictures, and that’s a promise — they’re about you. You will never be able to capture yourselves in this way. This is where you get to see yourself the way he or she sees you. This is fly on the wall stuff.  This is you, uninhibited.

This is love. This is where it all starts. And it’s too amazing and too important to go undocumented.
