We are Jeremy & Katie. This is what we look like when we’re being photographed. We also look like this when we’re not being photographed. We think. But we don’t really have any proof.
KATIE, ON JEREMY:
Jeremy is: the smiliest person I’ve ever met.
Jeremy’s special skill is: his awesome 80s dance moves.
Jeremy is scared of: being tickled right in the armpit when he doesn’t expect it.
Jeremy loves: my cooking.
If Jeremy was an insect, he would be a: a praying mantis. They got the moves, baby.
If Jeremy wasn’t a photographer, he would be a: barista. He kind of already is one. My own personal barista.
JEREMY, ON KATIE:
Katie is: wholehearted.
Katie’s special skill is: infectious laughter.
The thing that makes Katie laugh the most is: goats that sound like humans. Seriously, have you heard them?
Katie loves: her two boys – “a big one and a little one”.
If Katie was a bird, she would be: a Lilac Breasted Roller. Google it. Cutest bird ever.
If Katie wasn’t a photographer, she would be: annoyed.
GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS…
Heartstory has been operating in Canberra since 2009, and specialises in family portrait photography, which includes maternity, newborn, baby, child and couple photography. We also take a limited number of wedding photography bookings each season. We offer a range of fine art prints and products, including framed canvas prints, metal prints, fine art books, and of course digital collections.
We love to travel and we accept portrait and wedding bookings around Australia. We also hope to take on some international bookings in the next few years, so if you’re getting married and looking for a wedding photographer in the USA, Bali, Italy, France, Ireland or Iceland (our favourite destinations), please pick us!
A BIT OF HISTORY AND A FEW HORN TOOTS
2017: This year was a huge year for us personally. We got engaged in January (Jeremy proposed in the river on a camping trip with friends) and planned our entire wedding in 9 weeks, tying the knot in the Southern Highlands, NSW in April! Not long afterwards, we found out were were expecting a baby (due early 2018). In late August, Katie won 2017 AIPP Australian Family Photographer of the Year for the second time!!! In November we expanded our team with the addition of Mel, our fabulous studio assistant, and in December we moved our business out of our home and into an industrial-boho commercial space in Belconnen.
2016: This year Katie backed up her amazing win in 2015 by being a finalist for 2016 Australian Family Photographer of the Year (so close!!!). She also nailed in the ACT by winning 2016 ACT Family/Portrait Photographer of the Year (third win in a row for Heartstory!), while Jeremy took out 2016 ACT Travel Photographer of the Year with his Iceland photos. Katie was also a finalist in the same category.
2015: The most unbelievably incredible year, thus proving once and for all that we are a super team!!! Jeremy won the title of 2015 ACT Family Photographer of the Year, and Katie was a finalist in the same category, as well as also being a finalist for 2015 ACT Wedding Photographer of the Year. Katie was given her first national speaking gig at the Australian Photography Industry’s biggest professional development event. Jeremy was a semi-finalist in the Moran Contemporary Photographic Competition and Katie was a semi-finalist in the Head On Portrait Prize. At the national Australian Professional Photography Awards in October, Katie was awarded the highest honour of all: 2015 Australian Family Photographer of the Year, and Jeremy was a finalist! And Katie still hasn’t ruined her track record of being awarded for every single image entered at APPA for 6 years straight. Jeremy received his first APPA gold and this image was selected to represent Australia in the World Photographic Cup in 2016. You can read more about these achievements here (2015 Australian Family Photographer of the Year) and here (2015 ACT Family Photographer of the Year).
2014: Jeremy closed his Sydney studio space and moved to Canberra! Together they moved into a new home, with dedicated work area, including a beautiful natural light studio for newborn and baby portrait sessions. Katie finally received not one, but TWO Gold Awards (one with Distinction) at the ACT/NSW Professional Photography Awards, and was awarded 2014 ACT Highest Scoring Print! She also took out the family portrait category, so now holds the title of 2014 ACT Family Photographer of the Year (the best news ever!!!). Between them, they received 15 silver awards, 3 silver with distinction, 1 gold and 1 gold with distinction, spread across three categories: wedding, family & illustrative. Jeremy was a finalist for NSW Wedding Photographer of the Year, and Katie was also a finalist for ACT Illustrative Photographer of the Year. At the Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA) in September, Katie received her Master of Photography award from the AIPP (an incredible achievement for 5 years of membership), and between them they took home 1 gold, 3 silver with distinction and 4 silver awards.
2013: Jeremy entered the professional Photography Awards for the first time in 5 years, and won NSW AIPP Family Photographer of the Year, omgwoohoosoexciting!!! They both won several silver and silver with distinction awards for family, portrait, wedding album and photobook at state and national level of the Professional Photography Awards, and they both gained their Associateship with the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (which essentially means they worked really hard and won lots of awards). This was also the year they decided to join forces and become one of those crazy couples that live together, work together and hang out together 24/7.
2012: Katie got some serious loot this year! She was runner-up ACT AIPP Family Photographer of the Year, yay! She was a finalist in the prestigious Head On Portrait Prize, the People’s Choice winner in the Photobook of the Year Awards, a semi-finalist in the Moran Contemporary Photographic Competition and she was a runner-up (Editorial) and a finalist (Documentary) for Australia’s Top Emerging Photographer. She also won a heap of silver and silver with distinction awards at the state and national Professional Photography Awards. This was also the year Jeremy and Katie met. On a dance-floor. At a photography conference. True story.
2011: Katie was a multi-award winner at the state and national Professional Photography Awards. Again. She’s still dreaming of a gold award, but she’s very good at getting silvers.
2010: Immediately after launching Heartstory, Katie joined the Australian Institute of Professional Photography, entered the AIPP Epson ACT Professional Photography Awards for the first time and won AIPP Epson ACT Emerging Photographer of the Year; an awesome start to her new career! She also won the commercial category of the ACMP Projections competition, and a bunch of silvers at the Loupe Awards and the (national) Australian Professional Photography Awards (APPA).
2009: Katie made a huge decision and decided to leave her public service career and become a professional portrait photographer. She spent most of the year creating Heartstory, at the same time as looking after a busy toddler, and finally completing her Bachelor of Graphic Design with honours and a swag of awards. Jeremy entered the AIPP Professional Photography Awards for the first time and scored himself some silver awards at state and national level.
2008: Katie started photographing other people’s children and building a portfolio for herself. Her dreams began to solidify. Meanwhile Jeremy had become one of Sydney’s most sought after wedding and portrait photographers.
2007: Katie became a mum to Toby, the world’s cutest little boy, and her whole world changed. She began to dream about a career with more passion and purpose. She documented her son’s life on a daily basis. Jeremy Byrnes Photography had grown to a seven person team in Sydney, shooting 65 weddings and 150+ family portrait sessions a year.
2006: Jeremy joined the Australian Institute of Professional Photography. Katie was a publishing manager in the public service, and still working on that Bachelor’s degree.
2000: After 6 years of working for three of Australia’s leading wedding photographers in Sydney and Brisbane, Jeremy decided it as time to do his own thing, and launched Jeremy Byrnes Photography. Katie was a web designer in Canberra, and studying part-time to get her Bachelor of Graphic Design. They were blissfully unaware of each others’ existence.
