Three | Canberra portrait photographer

July 4, 2010

It’s been crazy busy since Toby’s birthday, and I had meant to blog again WAAAAY sooner than now. I still haven’t processed the many, many images I took on his actual birthday, so the first few here are from Toby’s Big Day Out, which was on Saturday. First we took him to see Toy Story 3, his very first trip to the cinema, and then we went to the zoo. And here he is, full of energy and joy and oh yeah… chocolate. Bribery works wonders with three year olds, when it comes to having their photo taken.

And this afternoon we went to a nearby favourite spot for a proper little photo session. Lookit how cute he is!

One more sleep | Canberra portrait photographer

June 30, 2010
It was 8.40am, and I found him sitting and drawing in a perfect little patch of light shining through from the kitchen window.

Heartstory {lifestyle photography}

Dear Toby,

Tomorrow you will be three years old, and for some reason it seems like a much bigger milestone than when you turned two. Probably because there is no doubting now you have left babyhood behind and become a little boy.

I can’t really explain the feelings I have over this birthday. On one hand, I am so excited for you, especially since this is the first birthday you truly understand and perhaps the first one that you’ll remember when you’re grown up. But on the other hand, I am really sad. Sad that you’ll no longer be two, or two-and-a-half, or two-and-three-quarters (which was the first age that you learnt to say when people asked how old you were). Sad that the last three years are over, and that when I think about how quickly they went, I can’t help but imagine how quickly the next three years will go. And the next three, and soon you’ll be reading these letters for real, the day I write them. And that’s a scary thought!  Because while I relish thinking about the kind of young man you’ll grow into, I don’t want to let go of these days we’re living right now. I don’t want to let go who you are right now because I love every single little thing about you in your just-about-to-turn-three-year-old glory.

I love the way you reach out and cup my cheek in your palm and look at me with such adoration. I love the way you snuggle in bed with me every morning and will stay there for as long as I want, even though you wriggle incessantly and sometimes poke me in the eye. I love the way you always notice when someone’s hurt or upset or just a little bit stressed and you come and ask what’s wrong. I love the way you make up words when you don’t know how to say something, and deliver them with the utmost confidence. I love that you have such a love and appreciation for music. I love that you come and sit on my lap while I’m editing photos and ask to see the babies and bellies. I love that you don’t care about gender yet, and you’re just as happy to play with a hot pink car as you are with a blue one. I love that you’re so tidy when you eat and you never get food all over your face. I love that you notice beautiful things like sunsets and flowers and cute little girls and always comment with such admiration and respect.  I love that you get upset when I tie my hair back and tell me that I need to get my curls out. I love the way you say ’sowwy’, ’sumpin’, ’boutside’ instead of outside, ‘zume’ instead of ‘zoom’, and that you still can’t say an L at the start of a word, but you’re trying. I love the way you still call our car the ‘new car’ even though we bought it a year ago. I love that your favourite song is a recording of ‘Shot by both sides’ that your Dad and his band made, and that you sing all the words and the guitar solo. I love that your other favourite song is by Sia, and after that comes ‘Let’s go driving in my car, car’. I love the way you say ‘Yes!’ so precisely. I love how when you draw, you don’t decide what it is that you’re drawing until after you’ve finished. I love how determined and strong willed you are. I love the way you boss us about. I love that you love people so much. I love that everything you feel comes out in such an intensely vocal way. I love that you get over your anger so quickly. I love that singsong squealy thing you do when you’re enjoying yourself. I love how excited you get when you see us after a day at daycare, or when you see someone else you love who you haven’t seen for a while. I love watching you try and imitate the silly faces I pull at you. I love the hilarious names you come up with for your toys. I love listening to you play by yourself. I love that you pick out your own shoes and hats and pretty much always seem to get them perfectly co-ordinated with your outfit. I love that you get scared by certain things in movies and TV shows, but you keep asking to watch them anyway. I love that you still don’t get out of bed by yourself ever, but you simply sit there and shout at the top of your lungs for one of us to come and get you. I love the way you try to think of stuff to make us come back up to your room after we’ve said goodnight, and when you really can’t think of anything you look at us sheepishly and just say ‘cuddle?’. I love your gorgeously messy blonde curls, your blue eyes, your little rosebud lips, your flawless complexion, your pudgy little fingers and your pokie outie belly with your pokie outie belly button. I love that you’re still a little shorty and your pants are always too long. I love that you still get mistaken for a girl from time to time. I love that you still suck those two fingers just like you did when you were 6 months old. I love that peculiar obsession you have with ears and how kissing our ears at bedtime has become part of your routine. I love the bold and earnest way you correct us so when we sing the wrong words to a song or do something, anything, in the wrong order. I love that you notice the tiniest little bruise or scratch on your Dad’s or my skin, look all concerned and say something like ‘Owie Mummy, you hurt your finger’ and then you try and kiss it better. I love the way you sometimes call us by our names rather than Mummy and Daddy just because you think it’s funny, and you know we do too. I love that you are such a little chatterbox. I love your crazy laugh, and how much joy the sound of it brings me. I love that you laugh so much. I love that I get to see you and cuddle you and kiss you and hang out with you every single day.

I love being your Mum and I love you, more than these words, more than any words, could ever express.

Love always,
Mummy.

Zoom-zoom-a-zoom-a-zoom-zoom! | Canberra child photographer

June 21, 2010

These shots were taken out the back of Brand Depot (or is it DFO – I can never remember) by the Canberra runways back in March.

Heartstory {children's photography}

Before I became a parent, I never had a preference as to whether I wanted a boy or a girl; I just wanted a healthy, happy baby. And I have to say that despite my love of fashion and girly things, I am so, so glad I had a little boy. And he is such a little boy, complete with every little boy stereotype imaginable; planes, trains, cars, diggers, bulldozers, cranes, rocks, insects, sticks, dinosaurs, rockets, robots, toolboxes, swords, pirates, bridges, tunnels, monsters and sharks. He’s also loud. Very loud. Very loud and very messy.

However, to balance out all that boyishness, he still gets mistaken for a girl sometimes because he’s just so pretty. And he’s very sweet and gentle and cuddly and often says things like ‘Mummy, where are your curls, you’ve got to get them out’ (when I have my hair tied back) and ‘Look at the little girl, she’s so pretty!’ and ‘Wow, look at the beautiful sky!’ Plus, he’s crazy about shoes. So I really feel like I have the best of both worlds.

You know your baby’s growing up when he can learn a new iphone game in less than a minute.

You know your baby’s still a baby when he throws a massive tantrum because it’s time to give mummy’s iphone back and go and have a bath.

Don’t forget to look after yourself | Canberra child photography

June 18, 2010

When Toby was 7 months old, he began to suffer from ear infections. It became chronic within a couple of months, and our family life took a very unpleasant turn. We were stuffed around by a lot of doctors and specialists, because it turned out Toby was not a ‘typical’ case, and we found it really hard to get any support, help or even reliable information for what seemed to be a very simple and common childhood health problem. He was sick for nearly 18 months, and for the first part of that, he was constantly on antibiotics and picked up every single cold and virus going around which just kept making his overall condition worse and worse. We ended up turning to natural medicine, and these days, although he still suffers from glue ear, he hasn’t had an infection for a really long time.

It was a difficult time for us, and if I’d had the time and energy, I would have written a blog about it, if only to help other parents out there experiencing similar. It feels like a bad dream now, but I know it happened. I know that for many, many months we were lucky to get 3 hours sleep a night, and spent more time in Toby’s room rocking him to sleep after hours of helplessly listening to him scream in pain than we did in our own bed.

No-one suffered any permanent damage (although Toby does have a rather funny obsession with ears these days!) and it proved to me how resilient humans (especially children) can be, and also how much a parent is prepared to suffer and fight for their child/ren.

During the worst of it, I remember a nurse at the QE2 hospital in Canberra reminding us how important it was for both of us to take some time out from our domestic responsibilities to unwind and refresh ourselves, and we should always accept as much help as possible from those around us. In times of stress, it’s even more important for parents to get time out, to be sure to have the energy and patience to cope with the next wave of trouble. Makes sense, right? Except most parents will know that when things are tough, you always put yourself last. We did. And our health suffered too. As did our sense of self.

I was remembering these times both yesterday and today, as I took some time out of my ‘normal’ schedule to hang out with mum. This morning, we had brunch in a nice cafe, and I looked over at my beautiful boy and felt so blessed that he is so healthy and happy. Those hard times feel like an eternity ago, but I will never forget what I learnt.

Heartstory {child photography}

So this is a shout out to all the mummies and daddies. When was the last time you took some time out?  A day to yourself, a night out, a special activity that you’ve always wanted to do? If you can remember the last time, please leave a comment and tell me about it. It might provide a little bit of inspiration and a nudge in the right direction for someone else who really needs it. And if it’s been so long that you can’t remember, then promise me you’ll change that really, really soon. Because the truth is that if you’re happier, refreshed and feeling good about yourself, you’ll be an even better parent than you already are.

xo Katie

T is for Toby | Canberra child photography

June 17, 2010

For the first two years of your child’s life, it feels like there are new ‘firsts’ almost every week. But after two, they seem to know and do so much, it’s hard to keep up with all the new stuff they keep learning.

Today we had a big one though. Toby loves to scribble on paper, but he’s more of an abstract expressionist than a French impressionist, if you know what I mean. He usually prefers to instruct us to draw things, rather than draw them himself. And my attempts to teach him to copy letters and numbers have so far been ignored with the kind of stubbornness that only a two year old can have. But this afternoon, Toby had a visit from a very clever little girlfriend of his who is quite advanced with her drawing skills, and after seeing her draw several drawings, his sense of competition must have kicked in, because after she left he drew a shark (which really does look rather like a shark) and a stingray (with a stinger and everything!) and then let his Omi (who is staying with us for a few days) help him write his name, and then… AND THEN…. he drew his very first T, all by himself, without even being prompted!

It was a very proud mummy moment, and although I had put down my camera by time he did it because I was so excited, I managed to catch a good frame a few minutes earlier of him having a second go at the ‘y’ at the end of his name, with the help of Omi. (And you can see part of his shark at the top of the page and his stingray just to the right of his name).

Little Aussie Waterbaby | Canberra child photography

June 16, 2010

The ‘family holiday’ is such an institution in Australia. I’m not sure every country or culture shares it, but I could be wrong. It’s so easy here, no matter where you live, to pack up the car and head to the beach or the bush, and spend a few days getting acquainted with nature and each other.

So we had our first ‘proper’ family holiday just a few months ago. We planned it to catch the tail end of summer sun, and we took off for five days, just the three of us. We didn’t go that far from home, but it’s one of my favourite places in the world. Jervis Bay. Beautiful scenery, white sand, mild weather, wildlife, stunning sunsets, and the most comfy, beautiful holiday rental ever.

Toby used to be petrified of the ocean, but this time he embraced it like a real Aussie Waterbaby. The only way we could  tear him away from the beach each night was by bribing him with ice cream. It was a joy to watch him having the time of his life, and I’m looking forward to sharing some of my favourite images from our holiday during the next couple of weeks.

Heartstory {child photographer}

I spent a good portion of my childhood growing up in Tasmania, so I certainly got my fair share of the outdoors, but I never got to experience that typical Australian family holiday. I wonder if Toby will remember this one as his first. And I wonder what will stand out the most for him… the ‘wobbly’ (what he called it when he tried to walk in the waves), splashing in the lagoon with Daddy, collecting pinecones, his first up close and personal encounter with a wallaby… or something else entirely that no-one else noticed but him.

I’d love to hear about your first family holiday: where did you go and what is your most vivid memory? Please indulge me!

Countdown | Canberra child photography

June 15, 2010

It was a few days ago… I was transferring some files from one computer to another and reorganising folders in the process, and I noticed something.  There was no ‘June’ folder in my personal photo directory. I looked closer and realised I hadn’t taken any photos of my little boy since the middle of May.

This shocked me because up until now I have photographed avidly at both work and play, and never had a gap like that. Ok, so I’ve had a busy few months, but it’s no excuse. Time goes too fast to miss out on a whole month, especially when your little ones are still so little! And as I get older, it feels like time is moving a little bit faster every single year. I am and have always been an avid documenter of life: I write, I photograph, I collect. Call me crazy, but I can’t bear the thought of forgetting (or not having time) to ritualise the events in my life into some sort of concrete memory! It’s just such a big part of who I am.

In sixteen days, Toby will turn three. Every mother will know exactly what I mean when I confess that each time I say or write those words, my eyes fill with tears and I stop breathing for several seconds. Those three years have gone by so fast, I can hardly comprehend it. My baby has well and truly become a little boy, and every time he does something new and clever, it makes me realise how long gone that baby is and I just want to stop the clock and hold him tight forever.

So in honour of Toby’s third birthday, and also to rectify my neglect in photographing our family life of late, I am going to post a photo every day up to and including his birthday on July 1st. I’m also going to write and share some thoughts and stories along the way. I really hope you enjoy this little journey – please don’t be shy – I’d love to hear some of your thoughts and experiences too!

***

I had quite a productive long weekend, part of which included putting the finishing touches on Toby’s room – a work in progress since hmm… August 2007, one month after he was born! Much as I would have loved to have created the dream nursery during the late stages of my pregnancy, our circumstances were such that it was impossible – we were renting and desperately trying to find our own home before Toby was born, our spare room was full of half packed boxes and most of our spare time was spent looking at houses. We moved into our own place when Toby was one month old, and the ‘first time parent’ thing is hardly conducive to oodles of free time (or money) to decorate a pretty room, so nothing happened for a long time. And then it began, bit by bit, piece by piece. The great thing is, that as he grew older, his room needed to be more practical and useful, and it made me think more carefully about long-term solutions and creating a room that he would really enjoy as a little boy, not just something that suited my own aesthetic.

I love the result. There’s loads of Ikea, a few very personal touches, some inspiration from images and websites that I’ve kept in my head over the past few years, and lots of beautiful splashes of bright colour. He absolutely loves it, and funnily enough has been sleeping a lot better than usual lately. I like to think it’s connected!

Heartstory {child photography}

This image shows only a small part of his room, but it’s got some of the best bits.

The quilt was made by my late Nanna. She was a dressmaker and an amazing quilter. She made this while I was pregnant and sent to us shortly after Toby was born. I used it on the floor of his room when he was a baby (it was great for tummy time), and was super excited to finally put it on his big bed when we set it up just a few months ago. Sadly Toby never got to meet his Great-Nanna, but I bet he treasures this quilt forever.

The stuffed toys (Dragon and Sharkie) are from Ikea – their stuffed toys are always so creative and fun. He loves to make Dragon and Sharkie eat each other.

On the wall to the left is a decal by Wall Candy that I bought from The Hip Infant, one of my favourite online children’s boutiques. I love decals, and it took me ages to decide on one, but I remember being really annoyed after buying it to suddenly discover a whole lot of new ones that I liked a whole lot better were suddenly available! It’s always the way!

The other wall decoration is based on an idea I saw in a photograph by another photographer of her son’s room. I have stretched some cotton tape between two nails and pegged an assortment of photographs and postcards to it. Toby loves it, and ever since I put it up, he tells me every day what’s in each picture – ‘there’s a fwoggie and a cheesy block and some fish and some sharkies and a helicopters and an owl and cars’. Sometimes he’ll add on ‘and there’s Toby with a big icecream cone, yum yum, I like icecream!’, but he usually ignores the rest of the photos.

But the really important thing in this photograph is the book Toby’s reading. The Gruffalo seems to be the Where the Wild Things Are of the Noughties. Toby has always loved it (and we both find it really fun to read it to him), but really developed an obsession over it at the start of the year when the BBC brought out the TV movie. If you have a little one and you haven’t seen this movie, you really must get hold of it; it’s full of the most stunningly magical CGI animation, and the story is beautifully narrated by Robbie Coltrane. Helena Bonham Carter, John Hurt and some other familiar British voices also feature. Toby went through a phase where he just wanted to watch the Gruffalo over and over and over, all day long. We had to ration it and strike serious Gruffalo bargains with him for the first time ever, it was crazy! After watching the movie a few times, he magically knew all the words off by heart and began to recite the entire book at random moments throughout the day. And of course, like most 2 year olds, his pronunciation was far from perfect and we used to giggle adoringly at his efforts. Our absolute favourite was the way he would say ‘and a poisonous wart at the end of his nooooiiiiise’ (instead of ‘nose’). He still loves it, and asks for one of us to read it to him fairly regularly, and if I ask nicely (like I did yesterday when I took this photo), he’ll read it to me.

I would love to know what your favourite book was when you were little, and do you still have it now?

Toby has mine on his shelf – it’s called Noisy Nora, and it’s all about a little girl mouse called Nora who was very noisy, and after being told to be quiet by her parents too many times, she decides to run away and hide. And of course they all miss her because it’s so quiet, but it turns out she was just hiding in the broom closet. I think my parents might have been trying to tell me something when they bought me that one.

My friend Bec | Canberra family photographer

May 28, 2010

This session took place a few weeks ago, in my favourite spot. To those who know where it is: shhhhh. Our secret. It’s a little hidden paradise, and I hope to keep it that way.

This is my dear friend Bec, her hubby Kent and their darling, beloved boy Ash. Bec is also a photographer, and I can feel deep in my heart as I’m typing these words just how much these photos are going to mean to her.

Bec and I have been good friends for five years. She helped and inspired me in a big way when I was just starting out as a photographer, and has been one of my biggest supports ever since. We worked together, became mums within a year of each other, and did the Jesh De Rox workshop together late last year, and since then we’ve seen each other grow and change in the most amazing ways.

I think these images really capture the beautiful person that she is to me and to others. Especially that fourth one down on the right–that’s her all over, and doesn’t it just make you smile?! She’s like that. She’s also a wonderful mother and one of the most caring and compassionate people I’ve ever met. I am so grateful to have her in my life.

Love you Bec. Love these too.

A lifetime of stories | Canberra family photographer

May 24, 2010

On Saturday afternoon I met another gorgeous family and had a total blast of a session. Sunshine, grassy fields, gum trees and lots of love and laughter; just the way I like it!

When Tania contacted me to book her session, she told me she loves the way I capture people so naturally, and wanted images like that for her family. The choice of location was an obvious one; a place where Tania, Craig, Chelsea and Thomas spend a lot of time, and it’s easy to see why. For starters, it’s just a stone’s throw from where they live, it’s a great place for their dog Harry to burn off energy, there’s plenty of room to kick a soccer ball around (and this family are soccer mad) – it’s an outdoors person’s paradise!

These guys were so much fun; so warm, sincere and down to earth. By the time the session was over, I felt a really strong bond with them, like I’d known them for a long time. It’s because our session wasn’t about standing over there and smiling at the camera; it was about who they are as people, and when families open up to me like they did, it makes it so easy for me to capture unique and genuine moments. I am especially fond of the ones of Chelsea and Tom together. At one point during the session I told Chelsea that one day she would look at those pictures and think they were the best thing ever; because that’s exactly how I feel when I see pictures of me and my brother from a similar age. And I know from just three years of being a parent how quickly things change and how important it is to preserve those moments in time, because one day they’ll be more precious than you could ever imagine. No matter how hard we try to live in the moment and remain grateful for each day we get to spend with the people we love, time still goes too, too fast.

Tania, Craig, Chelsea and Thomas: thank you for showing me you. I love these images, and I hope you do too. I’ll be in touch with your gallery soon.

I want to make a special mention about this last image… Tania and Craig told me they hadn’t had photos taken of just the two of them since they were married. That’s probably pretty normal, but I would like to ask everyone reading this: why? Why not celebrate your relationship and have some professional photos taken of just the two of you? This image makes my heart swell, and I’m not even in it!

Heartstory offers Love Story sessions for couples of all ages, for the simple purpose of celebrating love. Just because you can. Tania, Craig, Chelsea and Thomas had a Life Story session, designed to celebrate and capture real and natural family moments.
