FAQ

Who owns copyright?

It is a condition of my session that all clients sign a model release before their session commences. It states that copyright is retained by the photographer and Heartstory. I have two forms available: one which grants me permission to use the images from our session and another which does not. The form you use is up to you. If you purchase digital negatives, there is a separate contract to sign.

Purchasing digital negatives does not give you copyright: it gives you permission to reproduce and use your images in a variety of specified ways.

If we give you permission to use our images, how will you use them?

The ones I love the most will probably go into my website galleries, or even feature on a section page. I may select one to use on a business card or flyer. I will probably blog them. I may want to enter one in a photographic competition at some point in the future, but if I do this, I will always check with you first. I will never publically display an intimate photograph, such as a semi-nude maternity or breastfeeding photo without asking you first. You can be sure that I will always treat your family’s story with sensitivity and respect.

What is a sneak preview?

A sneak preview is when I post a small number of images from our session on my blog a few days after the session. It’s a bit of fun and excitement for me and you, and you can share it with your friends and family!

Do you sell digital files?

Of course. Digital files are a highly sought after luxury product and they give you unlimited freedom with your family’s story. A boxed DVD of all your digital files in both high resolution (for printing) and low resolution (for sharing online) is available for purchase. It comes with a boxed collection of 5x7.5” fine art prints.

Do you do studio photography?

No. I work exclusively on location and I use natural light. Sessions can take place at your home or any outdoors location of your choice. I have loads of favourite spots around Canberra and I am happy to make suggestions.

What should we wear?

Clothing that you feel comfortable in! Feel free to bring 1-2 outfit changes for little ones if you want variety, and have plenty of accessories standing by.

Try and avoid big logos and cartoon characters on clothing, because they tend to pull a lot of focus in photographs.  Try and avoid one person wearing all light colours if everyone else is wearing dark, and vice versa.

Other than that, just be you, and dress the way you want!

Do you do ‘Anne Geddes’ baby poses?

No. I photograph newborns simply and naturally and I don’t bring props. If your baby is very settled and sleeping deeply, I will photograph her asleep, however this is usually as simple as laying her in the cot, on your bed or on a blanket. If you are after Anne Geddes style images, I suggest you seek out a photographer who specialises in posed baby art.

Please see my newborn gallery for examples of what I do with newborns.

Do you Photoshop out pimples and bruises?

Generally I remove pimples, snot or small scratches from a baby’s face, especially if they are distracting. However, if you are concerned about this, it’s best that you try and keep babies’ and children’s faces clean during the shoot. I do not automatically Photoshop bruises out—some of you might consider such a thing to be an important part of your story! And I will never touch a birthmark, scar or mole unless it is specifically requested. I can certainly touch up adult skin, chins and waistlines if you want me to, but you must ask me about it at the session, not after the gallery is ready.

How do we pay?

I prefer direct deposit, which can be done in person or via internet banking. You may pay by credit card through Paypal if you prefer, however there is a 3% surcharge. Your session fee must be paid before the session takes place. Your order must be paid for before it can be fulfilled. I email invoices out immediately after booking your session and immediately after your order is confirmed. I am happy to negotiate payment plans.

What happens if my child is sick on the day of the session?

Sick child are generally not happy children, so I would encourage you to postpone the session if your child is sick. Your session fee is transferrable to another date. Please give me at least 24 hours notice, unless it’s an emergency.

What happens if it rains?

I generally do weather checks 1-2 days before our session is scheduled. If it looks like it will be dark and stormy, very wet or very windy, I will call to reschedule. Intermittent showers are not generally a problem unless we are in an outdoors location with littlies who aren’t yet walking.
