Family Portrait Photography
We’re big fans of little people, grown ups who love them and families of all kinds.
Heartstory was won more professional photography awards than any other family photography studio in Australia. And while we’re proud of all the awards, they’re not why we do what we do. We do it because even after all these years, we still fall in love with every person we photograph and every family we meet.
There is no right or wrong time to have your family photographed; there is only now!
Do it because:
- You value experiences, moments and relationships
- You’re in love with your family and want to preserve your story
- You want your kids to remember their childhood
- You’re celebrating a milestone, journey or transition
- You consider investing in yourself important
- You’re passionate about art, design, photography or history
What is portrait photography at Heartstory?
Portrait photography is photography dedicated to capturing people. While we are mostly focused on family photography, our hearts and our cameras love people and stories about people.
Our style of portrait photography is diverse and creative. A traditional portrait is often referred to as a head-and-shoulders photo of a person looking at the camera. When you book a session with us, you can expect to receive a range of images that includes creative and artistic portraits, traditional portraits, candid portraits and environmental portraits.
We find that most people are surprised by how much they like their portraits and experience tells us that often families choose different photos to what they may have anticipated before having a Heartstory session.
Heartstory portrait photography takes place on location, at home or in studio and includes:
- Family sessions + extended family sessions and couples, with or without pets (see below)
- Maternity & newborn focused sessions which also include the family
- Baby & child focused sessions which also include the family
- Special photography projects for books or exhibitions, such as Canberra at Home
- Business portraits
- Wedding photography

Families are our bag, our niche and our passion, but we want to be really clear that our definition of family is flexible, inclusive and modern!

We are also gender inclusive, religion inclusive and neuro inclusive.
The main styles of family photography we offer are:

How to book your family photography session
Visit the ‘Get started’ section to find out everything you need to know about the Heartstory photography experience, including pricing and how to book or fill out the enquiry form at the bottom of this page.
Every Heartstory photography experience starts with a getting to know you phone consultation and you will be invited to book your session during that session.
The
Consultation
Over the phone. We get to know you, find out your hopes and wishes for your photos, and discuss things like location and styling.
The
Session
On location, in studio or at your place (your home or rural property). You have an absolute blast being photographed by us and we capture all the magic.
The purchasing appointment
At our studio in Belconnen. You come for a personal appointment. Your decision-making game is strong. We create beautiful artwork for you to keep forever.
Extended family sessions, Christmas & other special occasions
We welcome extended family sessions (sometimes called multi-generation or generational sessions) and have photographed groups as big as 50.
An extended family session is an amazing opportunity to get photos of cousins, grandchildren, and elderly family members, so we will ask you about your priorities and customise the session to your hopes and wishes.
These sessions are a little different to others in that we will aim to photograph a variety of different combinations for you. For this reason, the session may feel less organic with less moving around and there may be a little more direction and instruction so we can make sure everything important is covered.
Groups of more than 8 are always best held outdoors, at your home or rural property.
Please note, Heartstory is not open between Christmas and New Year, however we often book many extended family sessions in the week before Christmas. They are also a great idea if the family is coming together for a first birthday, significant anniversary and other special occasions, which can occur at any time of year.
